Student Legal Assistance has operated since 1979 in order to provide free legal information and representation to low income residents of Calgary and the surrounding regions. SLA is a non-profit, registered charity organization staffed primarily by law students at University Of Calgary. Under the supervision of our Executive Director, Michelle Christopher, SLA’s Board of Directors, and a team of advising lawyers, our volunteer student caseworkers are responsible for client intake and management of files alongside their full-time studies. The student team is made up of a Student Director, an elected Student Executive, and approximately 100 caseworkers.
If you qualify, our caseworkers will be able to provide you with legal information and representation. Students also provide assistance with trial confirmation, and outreach services, including public legal information seminars through the City’s agencies such as Calgary Dream Centre and the Calgary Drop-In Centre.
It is our goal to reach those in need of legal services who are unable to afford the services of a lawyer. We would not be able to extend these services without the generous help and support of the legal community. Around 120 lawyers donate their time and expertise through consultation at our legal clinics, answering Caseworker questions over the phone and participating in various initiatives. Their involvement allows caseworkers to maintain the integrity and totality of our legal assistance.
